Part 1 — General

1.4 Definitions

A.Flush fill – Filling the crack so that the material is level with the pavement surface.
B.Overband – Extending the sealant or mastic slightly beyond the crack edges to seal both sides and protect against moisture intrusion.

1.5 Submittals

A.Provide the following for hot -pour crack sealants and flexible repair mastic materials.
1.Test results demonstrating compliance with the AASHTO and ASTM properties listed in this specification for review .
a.Use an AASHTO -accredited independent laboratory or the Product Evaluation and Audit Solutions (PEAS) program.
b.Provide test results for the current product formulation performed within the past five years, or from a current PEAS evaluation report.
2.Manufacturer Installation Instructions for information Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for information

1.6 Delivery, Storage, and Handling

A.Supply material pre- proportioned, pre- blended, pre- reacted and pre- packaged in lined boxes weighing no more than 30lb.
1.Use a dissolvable lining that will completely melt and become part of the mastic upon subsequent re- melting.
2.Deliver in the manufacturer’s original sealed container.
a.Clearly mark each container with the manufacturer’s name, trade name of mastic, batch or lot number, and recommended safe heating and application temperatures.

Part 2 — Products

2.1 Hot -Pour Asphalt Pavement Crack Sealant – Udot Type 1

A.Meet the requirements of ASTM D 6690 Type 1.
1.Use material that does not track in normal traffic after 45 minutes from application.
2.Use material that pours readily and penetrates 1/4 inch and wider cracks for the entire application temperature range recommended by the manufacturer.

2.2 Hot -Pour Asphalt Pavement Crack Sealant – Udot Type 2

A.Meet the requirements of Table 1.
1.Use material that does not track in normal traffic after 45 minutes from application.

2.6 Equipment

A.Sealant Heating Equipment
1.Use a double boiler or circulating hot oil heat transfer unit for indirectly heating product.
a.Use a unit capable of constant agitation.
b.Do not use direct heat transfer units (tar pots) .
B.Pavement Crack Router
1.Use equipment sufficiently maneuverable to follow meandering cracks and provide a uniform and controlled routing depth.
a.Use bits sharp enough to create a clean cut.
C.Compressed Air Lance or Hot Air Lance
1.Use a lance capable of providing clean, oil -free compressed air at a minimum volume of 90 cubic feet per minute at a pressure of 120 lbs per square inch.

Part 3 — Execution

3.1 Prepa Ration

A.Use a pavement crack router to open transver se cracks between 1/8 inch and 1/2 inch wide.
1.The Engineer may require routing longitudinal cracking if additional bonding and flexibility is desired.
2.Route j oints and to a 1/2 inch wide x 1/2 inch deep or 3/4 inch wide x 3/4 inch deep configuration.
3.Remove material from each side of the crack to produce a vertical, intact surface with no loosely bonded aggregates.
B.Use compressed air to clean crack walls and the surface around the crack.
1.Use a hot air lance when surfaces are wet or when air temperature is less th an 40 degrees F .
a.Do not use on saturated pavements.
b.Do not burn the surrounding pavement.
c.Seal cracks before pavement cools down .

3.2 Asphalt Pavement Sealant Application

A.Fill cracks less than or equal to 1 1/2 inch wide with hot -pour crack sealant .
1.Follow manufacturer safe heating and application temperatures.
2.Flush fill in applications prior to placement of a surface treatment or overlay.
a.Remove crack overfill by squeegee.
3.Overband, using a sealing disc, when a surface treatment or overlay is not scheduled within one year.
B.Fill cracks greater than 1 1/2 inch wide with flexible repair mastic material.
1.Verify the mastic fills the crack and extends slightly beyond the edges to create a controlled overband, sealing both sides of the crack.
C.Install material in a manner that produces an acceptably smooth riding surface.
D.Reapply material to any crack segment where material shrinkage or insufficient material was applied in a previous pass or application.

3.3 Limitation S

A.Do not place during rain or other adverse weather conditions.
B.Do not place if surface moisture is present.
C.Do not place on concrete bridge decks.
