Partial Depth Repair for Concrete Pavements Using Portland Cement Concrete 02751 – 1 of 4 PARTIAL DEPTH REPAIR FOR CONCRETE PAVEMENT USING PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE

Part 1 — General

1.1 Section Includes

A.Partial Depth repair of spalled or delaminated concrete in the upper one third t o one half of the pavement .

1.5 Submittals

A.Request to use alternative patching material to the Engineer for approval. Include the following:
1.Manufacturer’s product data sheets and recommended installation instructions.
2.Contact information for technical representative who will be on site. Refer to this Section, Paragraph 3.4.C Partial Depth Repair for Concrete Pavements Using Portland Cement Concrete 02751 – 2 of 4

Part 2 — Products

2.1 Repair Material

A.Use Class AA(AE). Refer to Section 03055.
1.Alternative patching material may be used when approved .

2.2 Concrete Curing Compound

A.Refer to Section 03390.

2.3 Hot Applied Joint Filler

A.Refer to ASTM D 6690, Type II

Part 3 — Execution

3.1 Identification and Preparaton of Repair Area

A.The Engineer will e stablish and mark rectangular or circular repair areas , extending at least 2 inch beyond a spalled area or 6 inch beyond the failed area.
1.The Engineer will re- mark any area that is discovered to be spalled or delaminated during the removal.
B.Remove concrete from repair area
1.Saw cut or core drill a minimum of 2 inch in depth around the exterior of the repair area.
2.Remove material with 30 pound class or smaller hand jackhammers.
C.Remove all loose particles, oil, dust, and all other contaminants.
1.Use sandblasting or waterblasting with at least 2,000 psi.
D.Remove all cleaning grit before placement.
E.Sandblast clean or remove partially exposed reinforcing steel before placing the patch material. Partial Depth Repair for Concrete Pavements Using Portland Cement Concrete 02751 – 3 of 4

3.2 Prepare Existing Joints for Placement

A.Maintain a width equal to the opening in all working joints and cracks within or adjacent to the patch by inserting a removable material such as cardboard, polyfoam, or fiberboard before placing the mix.
1.Use a material of uniform size and thickness.
B.Place the joint forming material 1 inch below and 3 inches laterally beyond the patch boundary.
1.Do not widen the existing joint to provide for or facilitate placement of the removable joint material.

3.3 Material Placement

A.Prepare the existing surface by applying a bonding agent of cementitious grout designed for bonding concrete products.
1.Prepare grout by combining sand and P ortland Cement in a 1:1 ratio by volume and enough water to produce a creamy consistency.
a.Apply with a brush to bottom and sides of repair area.
B.Place patching material before bonding agent dries.
C.Do not begin placement of alternative patching materials before having a manufacturer representative on site. Manufacturer’s representative will address the following requirements:
a.On site mixing permissibility and constraints
b.Surface preparation of the repair area and appropriate bonding agent
c.Consolidation requirements
d.Pot life of mix
e.Environmental conditions and limitations
D.Remove and replace patch if any of the following occurs:
1.Visible cracking
2.Shrinkage, including the breaking of bond between patch and pavement
3.Pop-outs including pieces of pavement greater than ½ inch diameter.
4.Patch surface profiles that are more than 1/8 inch below the existing roadway surface. Partial Depth Repair for Concrete Pavements Using Portland Cement Concrete 02751 – 4 of 4
E.Grind patches with surface profiles greater than 1/8 inch above the surrounding pavement surface to match the surrounding pavement surface.

3.4 Finish

A.Finish the patched surface to within ⅛ inch of the existing pavement.

3.5 Cure and Protect

A.Cure the patched surface immediately after finishing operations according to Section 03390 with the following change:
1.Uniformly spray the surface at a rate of 50 ft 2/gal.
B.Do not open to traffic until patching material has achieved required strength.
C.Protect all placements according to the authorized traffic control plan .
D.Fill overcuts flush to the pavement surface with a repair epoxy.
E.Remove joint forming material and fill all affected joints with hot pour material. Refer to ASTM D 6690

3.6 Clean Pavement

A.Sweep roadway and shoulders of all debris before opening to traffic. Prevent damage to the patches from cleaning equipment.

3.7 Limitations

A.Refer to Section 02752 .
