A.The Department will reduce the price paid per foot of longitudinal rumble strip not installed according to PV ser ies Standard Drawings , and according to Tables 1 and 2. Table 1 Difference from Specified Depth Pay Factor 0%-20% 1 > 20%-33% 0.75 > 33%-50% 0.50 > 50% Remove and Replace Table 2 Offset from Control Line Pay Factor 0-2 inch 1 > 2-4 inch 0.50 > 4 inch Remove and Replace
C.Remove and replace longitudinal rumble strips by milling 2 inch deep and a minimum of 4 ft wide with no new joints in wheel paths, leaving no pavement section less than 4 ft wide.
Part 2 — Products
2.1 Rumble Strip Seal
A.Flush Coat, Chip Seal Coat, or Asphalt Polymer Treatment (APT) . Refer to Section 02742S .
2.2 Equipment
A.Install longitudinal rumble strip with equipment using a rotary type cutting head capable of obtaining the required groove width, depth and length in a single pass while moving in the same direction as the traffic flow.
1.Use equipment with cutting heads having an independent suspension from the power unit to allow the head to self align with the slope of the shoulder.
2.Use cutting heads that provide a smooth surface, approximately 1/16 inch between peaks or valleys.
Part 3 — Execution
3.1 Installation
A.Install longitudinal rumble strip as shown to the dimensions and spacing in PV Series Standard Drawings.
1.Establish lane widths from plan set or existing roadway if not shown, before installation of longitudinal rumble strip.
2.Chip Seal Coat Application Timing
a.Install sinusoidal rumble strip a minimum of 30 days after placement of Chip Seal Coat.
b.Install conventional longitudinal rumble strip prior to placement of Chip Seal Coat.
B.Alignment Control
1.Establish a control line for placement of rumble strip using a dribble/drip line, temporary pavement marking material , or permanent application of pavement marking material according to Section 01558 in its permanent configuration and location before the installation of longitudinal rumble strip.
a.Establish control points at intervals no greater than 100 ft on tangents and no greater than 50 ft on curves.
C.Construct a 120 ft long test section each production day , or when the equipment is moved to another location, to demonstrate that the equipment, personnel , and methods of operation are capable of producing acceptable results without damaging the pavement .
D.Clean the surface of dirt, sand, dust, and other objectionable material to the satisfaction of the Engineer before applying rumble strip seal .
E.Apply rumble strip seal on asphalt surfaces after longitudinal rumble strip has been installed in the roadway .
1.Refer to Section 02742S for rumble strip seal speed and application method to achieve uniform application rate and to prevent shadow areas of thinner application depths .
a.Apply rumble strip seal continuously not stopping for gaps in grinds.
2.Apply rumble strip seal a minimum of 6 inch wider than the grind on each side.
F.Do not apply rumble strip seal on Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP) surfaces.
G.Remove resulting debris before opening the adjacent lane to traffic.
1.Dispose of material according to Federal, State , and Local regulations .
