Grinding For Grooved- In Pavement Markings GRINDING FOR GROOVED -IN PAVEMENT MARKINGS

Part 1 — General

1.1 Section Includes

A.Pavement grinding for the installation of grooved- in pavement markings.

1.4 Definitions

A.Pavement Markings - Are both Pavement Messages and Pavement Striping .
B.Pavement Messages – Markings generally placed perpendicular to and across the flow of traffic such as word, symbol, and arrow markings; stop, yield, and crosswalk lines; speed measurement markings; parking space markings; markings on shoulder such as chevron markings, and others.
C.Pavement Striping – Lines placed parallel and adjacent to the flow of traffic such as lane lines, center lines, edge lines, channelizing lines and others.

1.5 Submittals

A.Pavement marking manufacturer’s recommendations for groove installation and cleaning for information.

Part 2 — Products

2.1 Equipment

A.Provide a machine that:
1.Is capable of grinding or cutting to the required depth and cross section . Grinding For Grooved- In Pavement Markings
2.Is capable of providing a surface profile that meet s pavement marking manufacturer ’s recommendations.
3.Has sufficient power, traction, and stability to mai ntain an accurate depth of cut.
B.Walk -behind machines are not allowed for pavement striping.
C.Use appropriate cleaning equipment capable of sweeping, blowing out and picking up millings during and after grinding operations.

Part 3 — Execution

3.1 Preparation

A.Establish horizontal control line for grinding by placing control points as needed.

3.2 Grinding

A.Grind pavement for pavement striping and in pavement message areas to specified depth, width, and length.
1.Maintain 1 inch to 3 inch between the groove edge and the Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP) longitudinal joint or place the groove within 2 inch of the control line on Asphalt pavements , or as shown.
2.Do not grind bridge decks and approach slabs for pavement markings.
B.Groove Depth
1.Epoxy Paint
a.Minimum depth of 100 mils and a maximum depth of 120 mils.
2.Waterborne Paint
a.Minimum depth of 60 mils and a maximum depth of 80 mils.
3.Preformed Thermoplastic
a.All single layer preformed thermoplastic messages and markings: minimum depth of 110 mils and a maximum depth of 200 mils.
4.Tape
a.Minimum depth of 160 mils and a maximum depth of 200 mils. Grinding For Grooved- In Pavement Markings
C.Groove Width
1.Grind at full groove depth a maximum of 1 inch wider than the width of the pavement striping .
2.Grind at full groove depth a minimum of 1 inch beyond outer pavement message dimensions.
D.Groove Length
1.Grind at full groove depth a maximum of 2 inches longer than the length of the pavement striping .
2.Grind at full groove depth a minimum of 1 inch beyond outer pavement message dimensions.

3.3 Cleaning

A.Remove millings and clean the surface as work progresses.
1.Milled material is the property of the Contractor.
2.Use a n air compressor capable of producing a minimum of 185 cfm and 120 psi to remove fine dust from the groove.
a.Use compressed air free of oil and water. 1) Refer to ASTM D 4285.
3.Follow any additional manufacturer’s recommendations for groove cleaning.
