Part 1 — General

1.1 Section Includes

A.Grinding of concrete bridge decks, approach slabs, and sleeper slabs for precast concrete deck panel systems
B.Grinding of existing concrete bridge decks, approach slabs, and sleeper slabs for rehabilitation work

1.4 Definitions

A.Critical Areas – Areas of the deck where concrete cover will be or is anticipated to be less than 2 inch after grinding.

1.5 Submittals

A.Request for alternative to ferroscanning for review. Include at least the following:
1.Model name and technical data sheet for proposed equipment
2.Manufacturer’s guidelines for proper usage of the equipment
B.Map of rebar depths for review.
1.State on the submittal that the record of measurements are representative of the deck before grinding was performed.
2.Indicate the critical areas and include a description of the resolution if low measurements caused a stop in work .

Part 2 — Products

2.1 Equipment

A.Provide and operate equipment utilizing diamond blades mounted on a self-propelled machine designed for grinding and texturing pavement.
1.Do not use equipment that causes damage to the transverse or longitudinal joints.
B.Provide vacuuming equipment for the removal of residue and excess water.

Part 3 — Execution

3.1 General Requirements

A.Provide a uniform finished texture.
B.Limit deviations to an ⅛ inch from the lower edge of a 10 ft straightedge after grinding.
C.Perform grinding in a longitudinal direction.
1.Begin and end grinding at lines normal to the bridge centerline.
D.Protect expansion joints during grinding operations.
E.Create a surface in a parallel, corduroy -type texture consisting of grooves between 1/16 and ¼ inch wide.
1.Use a distance between the grooves of between 1/16 and ¼ inch.
2.Limit height of ridges to 1/16 inch.
F.Maintain drainage.
G.Use vacuuming equipment after grinding to remove residue and excess water.
H.Tailings from the grinding process become the property and responsibility of the Contractor.

3.2 Grinding Precast Decks and Approach Slabs

A.Grind surfaces of concrete bridge decks and approach slabs until both sides of panel joints are in the same plane and the entire surface, including the sleeper slab to roadway interface, meets the requirement of this Section, 3.1B.
1.Do not perform grinding operations until the concrete in the blockouts and closure pours has cured for at least 24 hours.
2.Limit grinding to a depth of no more than ¼ inch.

3.3 Grinding Existing Deck Surfaces

A.Grind surfaces as shown.
B.Verify concrete cover to reinforcing steel by ferroscanning or an authorized equivalent method before grinding.
1.Do not grind the concrete if the final concrete cover after grinding is anticipated to be less than the cover shown, or less than 2 inch if cover is not shown .
C.Do not damage existing reinforcing steel .
