02981 – 1 of 3

Part 1 — General

1.1 Section Includes

A.Grinding pavements.

1.2 Related Sections

A.Section 02701 : Pavement Smoothness

1.3 REFERENCES Not Used

1.4 DEFINITIONS Not Used

1.5 SUBMITTALS Not Used

Part 2 — Products

2.1 Concrete Grinding Equipment

A.Provide and operate equipment utilizing diamond blades mounted on a self- propelled machine designed for grinding and texturing pavement.
B.Do not use equipment that causes damage to the transverse or longitudinal joints.

2.2 Asphalt Bump Grinding Equipment

A.Use one of the following pieces of equipment:
1.Equipment utilizing diamond blades mounted on a self -propelled machine designed for grinding and texturing pavement.
2.A mobile, self -contained machine utilizing diamond tipped teeth specifically designed to improve longitudinal roadway smoothness with the following characteristics:
a.Independent dual parallel averaging arms with a minimum length of 25 ft to hold and control the drum height
b.A minimum 8 ft wide cutting drum tapered on the outer edges to eliminate a vertical edge 02981 – 2 of 3
c.Capable of reading common profiler data in real time and compensating for the roughness identified.
3.Equipment utilizing a hydraulically driven asphalt bump grinding attachment with the following characteristics:
a.A rotatable housing with swivel casters capable of rotating right to left and forward and backward.
b.An adjustable averaging sk i with a minimum width of 1 ft and a maximum length of 12 ft .
c.A manual device for setting depth.
d.An internal water system with the ability to flow water through the center of the drum.
e.A double hit cutting drum designed specifically for planing/shaving asphalt to close tolerances with a minimum of two wraps of f lighting with a flat 0.75 inch carbide or diamond bit on each wrap with 0.05 inch overlap.
B.Do not use micro milling, fine milling or standard milling machines.

2.3 Vacuuming Equipment

A.Use vacuuming equipment to remove residue and excess water.

Part 3 — Execution

3.1 Grind

A.Provide a uniform finished texture.
B.Perform grinding in a longitudinal direction.
1.Begin and end grinding at lines normal to the pavement centerline.
C.Do not cause damage to the underlying surface of the pavement.
D.Provide uniform transverse slope of the pavement , to maintain cross slope drainage, with no depressions or misalignment of slope greater than 0.25 inch in 10 ft when tested with a 10 ft straightedge.
E.Do not grind structures.
F.All residue from the grinding process becomes property and responsibility of the Contractor. 02981 – 3 of 3

3.2 Concrete Grinding

A.Grind until the surface of both sides of the transverse joints are in the same plane and smoothness requirements are met .
B.Provide a uniform f inished texture with resultant surface in a parallel, corduroy -type texture consisting of grooves between 0.090 and 0.150 inch wide.
1.Create a distance between the grooves of between 0.060 and 0.13 inch.
2.Make peaks of the ridges approximately 1/16 inch higher than the bottom of the grooves

3.3 Smoothness

A.Refer to Section 02701 .
