Part 2 — Products

2.1 Asphaltic Plug Joint System

A.Provide asphaltic plug matrix and traffic bearing/bridging plates from the same supplier .
1.Asphaltic plug matrix
a.Includes aggregates and elastomeric binder
b.Meet the requirements of ASTM D 6297.
B.Label containers containing elastomeric binder with the following:
1.Manufacturer’s name
2.Lot or batch number
3.Date of manufacture
4.Date of packaging
5.Date of e xpiration
6.Manufacturer’s storage and handling recommendations

2.2 Backer Rod

A.Size the diameter of the backer rod to be 25 percent to 50 percent larger than opening at time of installation. For example:
1.0.5 inch backer rod for 3/8 inch opening
2.0.625 inch backer rod for ½ inch opening
3.1 inch backer rod for ¾ inch opening
4.1.25 inch backer rod for 1 inch opening
B.Use a closed cell, polyethylene- foam rod joint filler.
1.Meet the requirements of ASTM D 5249 Type 1.

2.3 Plywood

A.¾ inch thickness

2.4 Silicone Joint Sealer (High Temperature)

A.Cold-applied, gun- grade material that cures under field conditions to form a non- sag, elastomeric joint seal.
1.Meets the requirements of ASTM C 920, Type S, Grade NS, Class 25 or higher .
a.Includes use T, M or I.
2.Service temperature range meeting or exceeding -40 degrees F to 400 degrees F.
3.Final cure time no more than 24 hour s.

2.5 Equipment

A.Sandblaster/Air Compressor
1.Verify air is free of water and oil according to ASTM D 4285.

Part 3 — Execution

3.1 Preparation

A.Remove existing expansion joint system and asphalt when shown.
B.Asphalt Pavement Preparations
1.Place plywood directly on clean concrete deck to cover the joint before placing asphalt.
2.Saw cut and remove asphalt to the dimensions shown to create blockout after asphalt placement .
a.Set saws to cut the ¼ inch less than the full depth of the wearing surface.
b.Do not allow traffic or construction equipment to cross the cut edge.
C.Thoroughly clean and dry the entire blockout .
1.Remove s mall debris using compressed air.
2.Sandblast the length of the blockout to clean remaining debris on the vertical walls and adjacent deck area.

3.2 Limitations

A.Apply when the outside air temperature is above 40 degrees F, and will remain above 40 degrees F for the manufacturer's recommended cure time.
B.Do not apply within 24 hours of a rain event, nor if a rain event is forecasted within 8 hours.

3.3 Installation

A.Install the silicone joint seal er (high temperature) and backer rod below the parapet surface before installing asphaltic plug joint system .
1.Install when the weather conditions meet the manufacturer’s installation instructions .
B.Apply hot binder and backer rod to the joint .
1.Place t he top of the backer rod a t least 1 inch and no more than the width of the existing joint , below the bottom of the blockou t.
C.Follow the asphaltic plug joint manufacturer’s recommended installation procedures .
D.Place matrix in lifts according to the manufacturer ’s recommendations .
1.Do not exceed a lift height of 1.5 inches.
2.Place matrix to finished grade as shown.
E.Seal top surface of asphaltic plug joint as recommended by the manufacturer .
1.Extend s eal at least 2 inches onto asphalt or concrete surface.
