EV Charger Electrical Code — Circuit Sizing, GFCI & Load Calculations
An EV charger is the largest continuous load most houses have ever seen, and the NEC treats it that way: everything is sized at 125%, receptacles get GFCI protection, and the service itself may need a load calculation before the permit is issued.
Worth knowing
- Most 48A-capable wall units can be dip-switched down to 40A or 32A — the cheapest fix when the panel has a 50A space but not a 60A one.
- The 14-50 receptacle route now costs a GFCI 2-pole breaker; hardwiring the charger avoids it and drops nuisance trips, which is why electricians increasingly hardwire.
- 6 AWG copper NM-B is only good for 55A — a 60A circuit in Romex needs 4 AWG, or run 6 AWG THHN in conduit. This catch generates a lot of failed inspections.
- Not every state is on the 2023 NEC — on the 2020 edition the GFCI receptacle rule is narrower. Check the state page for the adopted edition.
