Garage Floor Slope and Drainage Requirements — IRC R309.1

The garage floor rule is short and often misquoted: the surface has to be noncombustible, and the part you park on has to slope so spilled liquids move to a drain or out the vehicle door. Almost everything else people cite — 4 in. thick, wire mesh, a 4 in. curb — is convention or an old code, not the current IRC.

Worth knowing

  • The 4 in. curb, or the requirement that the garage floor sit 4 in. to 6 in. below the adjoining dwelling floor, comes from older model codes and is not carried in the current IRC. Many builders still step the slab down because it keeps water and vehicle fluids from running into the house, and some jurisdictions reinstate it by local amendment.
  • Whether you may install a garage floor drain at all, and where it may discharge, is a local plumbing and environmental question. Sanitary sewer connections often require an oil or sand interceptor and utility approval, storm discharge is frequently prohibited outright, and some jurisdictions ban interior garage drains entirely — ask before you set the pipe.
  • Sloping toward the door is the simplest compliant answer and needs no drain, no interceptor, and no utility conversation. It is why most production builders do it that way.
  • Sloping to the door only works if the apron outside continues away from the building. A driveway that pitches back toward the garage cancels the slab slope and puts water inside on every storm.
  • The 18 in. ignition-source rule was not deleted from the 2021 IRC — what changed is that the flammable vapor ignition resistant listing gives most modern gas water heaters a legitimate exception. Confirm the specific model’s listing and any local amendment before setting an appliance directly on the slab.
