Garage Receptacle Requirements — Circuits, GFCI & Outlet Placement

Garages get their own electrical rules because they collect power tools, freezers, battery chargers, and damp concrete floors — a combination the NEC treats as high-risk. The 2023 code requires at least one receptacle for every vehicle bay on its own 20-amp circuit, and every receptacle in the space needs GFCI protection. Here is what an inspector will look for.

Worth knowing

  • The 5½-foot height limit exists so the required receptacle is actually usable from the floor — a receptacle up at the ceiling serving the opener never satisfies 210.52(G)(1).
  • The dedicated garage circuit rule dates to the 2017 NEC, so jurisdictions on 2014 or earlier editions may not enforce it — but GFCI protection in garages goes back decades and is enforced everywhere.
  • Freezers and refrigerators in garages have no GFCI exemption in recent code editions. If nuisance tripping is a concern, the fix is a quality appliance-rated GFCI breaker, not removing protection.
  • Detached garages without electric power don’t trigger any of these rules — but the moment you run a circuit out there, the bay receptacle, lighting, and GFCI requirements all apply.
