Low-Voltage Landscape Lighting — NEC 411, Burial Depth & Permits

Low-voltage landscape lighting feels like a no-rules DIY project, and mostly it is — but the NEC does regulate it through Article 411, and the line-voltage side feeding the transformer follows all the normal rules. The good news: burial depth for 30-volt-or-less lighting circuits is only 6 inches, and plug-in systems rarely need a permit.

Worth knowing

  • Permits: swapping fixtures on a plug-in 12V system is almost never permitted work, but installing a new outdoor receptacle or a hardwired transformer circuit is line-voltage electrical work that typically requires a permit — the dividing line is the transformer.
  • The 6-inch burial allowance assumes cable listed for direct burial; running it shallower or exposed on grade invites shovel and aerator damage, which is the number-one failure mode for these systems.
  • Voltage drop, not code, dictates most design decisions — long runs of small-gauge cable dim the far fixtures. Larger cable and multiple home runs solve what no code table addresses.
  • Solar and battery fixtures with no wiring to the premises fall outside these rules entirely.
