Wall Bracing Basics — Braced Wall Lines, Panels & Methods
Wall bracing is how a wood-framed house resists wind and earthquakes trying to rack it into a parallelogram, and R602.10 is the densest section in the IRC. The concepts are simple — lines, panels, methods, amounts — but garage fronts and window-heavy walls are where plans go to die.
Worth knowing
- Gypsum board (GB) counts as bracing but is weak — expect to need roughly twice the length compared to WSP, and interior gyp on only one face counts for less. High seismic categories restrict it further.
- Garage fronts are hard because a 3-car opening leaves almost no wall: the answer is nearly always a portal frame with hold-downs or an engineered shear wall, decided before the slab pours since hold-downs anchor into the foundation.
- Continuous sheathing (CS-WSP) — sheathing every square foot of the wall including above and below openings — buys you shorter qualifying panels and is often the cheapest way out of a bracing shortfall.
- Bracing is checked per line, per story, per direction. A house can pass everywhere except one side wall full of windows, and that one line fails the plan review.
- When the prescriptive math will not work, an engineered lateral design replaces R602.10 entirely — common for big glass, hillside lots, and high seismic zones.
