MUTCD E6-1: Pull-Through Signs
The E6-1 sign is covered in Section 2E.27 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.

- Guidance · Recommended (should)Pull-Through signs should be used where the geometrics of a given interchange are such that it is not clear to the road user as to which is the through roadway, or where additional route guidance is desired. - Standard · Required (shall)When used, Pull-Through signs shall display the route shield and the cardinal direction for the through route.
