MUTCD E9-1: Interchange Sequence Signs
The E9-1 sign is covered in Section 2E.24 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.
What it means and when it is used
- Guidance · Recommended (should)Where there is less than 800 feet between the theoretical gores of successive interchange entrance or exit ramps, Interchange Sequence signs should be used instead of Interchange Advance guide signs for the affected interchanges.
- Guidance · Recommended (should)If used, Interchange Sequence (E9-1 or E9-2) signs should be used over the entire length of a route in an urban area.
Placement and mounting
- Support · InformationInterchanges are sometimes closely spaced, particularly through large urban areas, so that typical guide signs cannot be adequately spaced. In such cases, Interchange Sequence signs identifying the next two (E9-1) or three (E9-2) interchanges (see Figure 2E-10) can provide the necessary exit destination guidance.
- Standard · Required (shall)Interchange Sequence signs shall be installed in a series. Interchange Sequence signs shall display the next two or three interchanges by name or route number with distances to the nearest ¼ mile.
- Standard · Required (shall)The first Interchange Sequence sign in the series shall be located in advance of the first Interchange Advance guide sign for the first interchange.
