MUTCD W8-17P: Shoulder Signs and Plaque

The W8-17P sign is covered in Section 6H.26 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition. Below are the provisions from that section that describe when the sign is used and how it is placed.

What it means and when it is used

  • Option · Permitted (may)
    The SOFT SHOULDER (W8-4) sign (see Figure 6H-1) may be used to warn of a soft shoulder condition.
  • Option · Permitted (may)
    The LOW SHOULDER (W8-9) sign (see Figure 6H-1) may be used to warn of a shoulder condition where there is an elevation difference of 3 inches or less between the shoulder and the travel lane.

Placement and mounting

  • Option · Permitted (may)
    A SHOULDER DROP-OFF (W8-17P) supplemental plaque (see Figure 6H-1) may be mounted below the W8-17 sign.
