Deck permit checklist — Montgomery, Alabama

Assembled from Montgomery’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Montgomery requires a permit for a deck.

When a permit is not required

Under section 5-71, which amends residential code subsection R105.2, a freestanding deck needs no permit if it is 200 square feet or smaller, sits no higher than 30 inches above grade at any point, is not attached to a dwelling, and does not serve the dwelling's required exit door under section R311.4.
