Deck permit checklist — Tempe, Arizona

Assembled from Tempe’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Tempe requires a permit for a deck.

When a permit is not required

Decks on R-3 occupancies, detached single-family and two-family dwellings and townhomes are exempt from permit when they are 200 square feet or smaller, no higher than 30 inches above grade, freestanding rather than attached to a dwelling or townhouse, and not serving the required exit door (Tempe Administrative Code, City Code Sec. 8-105, 105.2).
