Do you need a permit?
Long Beach does not require a permit for a fence.
Long Beach Municipal Code Section 18.04.020.B.4 exempts fences built of materials other than concrete, masonry, brick, heavy timber or other similar materials where they are not over seven feet in height above grade, and fences built partially or wholly of concrete, masonry, brick, heavy timber or other similar materials where they are not over four feet in height above grade; a fence built without a building permit under that exemption must still comply with the zoning height limits. Information Bulletin BU-041 Residential Fence and Garden Walls, last revised in 2018, instead sets the threshold at six feet six inches for wood, chain link, wrought iron and other similar materials and four feet for concrete, masonry, brick and other similar materials. An electrical permit may still be required for ancillary additions such as electric lights or automatic gates.
