Do you need a permit?
Columbus requires a permit for general building work.
City Code section 8-14.4 sets out the work Columbus lets proceed without a building permit. Cosmetic and finish work makes up the largest group: paint, wallpaper, floor coverings, and installed cabinetry or countertops. Also outside the requirement are stage sets built for film, broadcast or theatre use; above-ground pool kits shallower than 24 inches; backyard play structures; and wall-mounted awnings that reach out 54 inches or less and carry no separate posts. Small repairs are likewise exempt, but only where nothing structural is touched — no cutting into a wall or a support member, no change to a required exit path, and no work on regulated piping, wiring or mechanical equipment. The building official decides case by case whether a given repair qualifies. Sheds, canopies, tents and fencing put up to support active construction are treated the same way, so long as they come down promptly once the job ends.
