Kansas City requires a permit for a deck.
Under Section 124 of the building code adopted at Unified Government Code Section 8-25, decks and platforms no more than 30 inches above grade are among the items exempt from a building permit, so long as the deck does not sit above a basement or lower story and does not serve an accessible route.
