Fence permit checklist — Portland, Maine
Assembled from Portland’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.
Do you need a permit?
Portland does not require a permit for a fence.
The Building Permit Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) lists fences that are 7 feet or less in height among examples of projects that do not need a building permit, and states that the property owner is still responsible for meeting code requirements and that historic preservation standards may still apply.
