General building work permit checklist — Laredo, Texas

Assembled from Laredo’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Laredo requires a permit for general building work.

When a permit is not required

Residential work that is exempt from a building permit is identified by reference to Section R105.2 of the 2021 International Residential Code. Ordinance 2024-O-149 puts that edition in force, together with the 2021 editions of the International Building Code, International Mechanical Code, International Property Maintenance Code, International Energy Conservation Code and International Existing Building Code, and Ordinance 2024-O-148 puts the 2020 National Electrical Code in force. The adopting ordinances are the controlling statement of which edition applies; the building chapter of the codified Code of Ordinances is distributed only through the city codifier and is not confirmed to carry the 2021 editions.
