General building work permit checklist — Murray, Utah

Do you need a permit?
Murray requires a permit for general building work.
Murray City Code 17.04.080 states that construction, alteration, repair or removal of any building or structure or any part thereof, as provided or restricted in the zoning title, shall not be commenced or proceeded with except after issuance of a building permit by the Building Inspection Division. The City's Miscellaneous Plan Submittal Checklist supplies the two published thresholds that operate as exemptions: fences below 7 feet do not require a building permit, and racking systems, shelving and similar fixed equipment require a building permit only when they exceed 5 feet 9 inches in height. As of July 1, 2023 Utah adopted the 2021 I-Codes and the 2023 NEC; Murray notes the International Residential Code remains the 2021 edition.
