Do you need a permit?
Murray requires a permit for a fence.
Murray's Miscellaneous Plan Submittal Checklist states that all fences require Planning & Zoning Department approval, that fences 7 feet and above require a building permit while a fence below 7 feet does not require a building permit, and that fences 8 feet or taller require engineered plans to be submitted as part of the plans. Murray City Code 17.64.020 sets residential fence heights separately: in a front yard, nonsolid fencing is limited to 4 feet and solid fencing to 3 feet; interior side yard fencing is limited to 6 feet; corner side and rear yard fencing is limited to 6 feet, reduced to 3 feet solid or 4 feet nonsolid within 10 feet of an abutting driveway. Chapter 17.64 also contains sections on grade differential, shrub plantings, clear view of intersecting streets, nonconforming fences, barbed wire and electrical fencing restrictions, fence height exceptions and creation of a public hazard.
