Shed permit checklist — Virginia Beach, Virginia

Assembled from Virginia Beach’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Virginia Beach requires a permit for a shed.

When a permit is not required

The Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, which is the building code enforced in Virginia Beach, waives the permit application for a detached single-story structure serving as a tool shed, a storage shed, a playhouse or the like, so long as its building area stays at 256 square feet or under and it is not a Group F-1 or H occupancy (13VAC5-63-80, Section 108.2).
