Shed permit checklist — Burlington, Vermont

Assembled from Burlington’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Burlington requires a permit for a shed.

When a permit is not required

Buildings of 24 square feet or less and no taller than 15 feet are exempt from the zoning permit requirement as long as they are located in compliance with applicable setbacks. This exemption is limited to 1 such structure, or multiple structures in aggregate up to 24 square feet, per property, and does not apply to properties located within the Special Flood Hazard Area. Children's play structures and seasonal skating rinks are also exempt.
