Pavement Structure

Defined in the standard specifications of 8 state transportation agencies. Each definition below is the agency’s own text, with the section it comes from — they do not all say the same thing, and on a contract the difference is the point.

Definitions are quoted from state-authored public specification books. This page carries no I-Code-derived terms.

Colorado · CDOT

The combination of one or more of the following courses placed on a subgrade to support and distribute the traffic load to the roadbed. (1) Subbase. The layer or layers of specified or selected material placed on a subgrade to support a base course, surface course, or both. Subgrade that has been treated with lime, fly ash, cement kiln dust, or combinations thereof for stabilization will be considered subbase. (2) Base Course. The layer or layers of specified or selected material placed on a subbase or a subgrade to support a surface course. (3) Surface Course. One or more layers of a pavement structure designed to accommodate the traffic load, the top layer of which resists skidding, traffic abrasion, and the disintegrating effects of climate. The top layer is sometimes called “ wearing course.”
