406-1.01 DESCRIPTION . Form a series of indentations into the pavement.
406-2.01 MATERIALS. None.
406-2.02 MILLING EQU IPMENT. Use equipment designed to mill rumble strips int o asphalt
pavement capable of providing, in a single pass, smooth (approximately 1/16- inch between peaks and valleys) indentations with crisp clean edges. Equipment will use water with the cutting head, minimize dust creation, and align the indentations with a guidance system that is clearly visible to the operator. CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS
406-3.01 PREPARATION . Inspect roadway to receive rumble strips for acceptable pavement
condition. Repair unacceptable pavement as directed. Stake all locations where milling will start and stop with the specified set back distances and place the edge line. Prepare the roadway for the milling operation by providing a smooth clean surface. Sweep all loose material from the roadway surface in line with the planned rumbl e strips and to each side of the strips for the width of the milling machine plus an additional 12” minimum per side or edge of pavement whichever is smaller, and as directed. Sweep and broom according to Subsection 643-3.04, item. 6.
406-3.02 TOLERANCES FOR RUMBLE STRIPS. Make the edges of the indentation straight,
smooth and free of spalling. Meet the following tolerances:
406-3.03 RUMBLE STRI P TEST SECTION. Construct a rumble strip test section, and receive
acceptance prior to production. The equipment, preparation, personnel, and method of operation used for the test section shall be the same as used on the remainder of the work. Install a test section, for each type of rumble strip specified, for a distance of 1/4 mile, or as required by the Engineer. Demonstrate for each type of rumble strip that the equipment and method will pr ovide the desired milled -in rumble strip, including the surface inside each depression, without damaging the surrounding asphalt pavement. If a test section does not meet tolerances, provide new equipment, new method, or make necessary adjustments and ret est. Additional test sections will 145 ALASKA 2020 be required before production runs will be allowed to begin. Testing in addition to the initial test sections will be at the Contractor’s expense. Demonstrate the equipment for containing dust and waste material.
406-3.04 RUMBLE STRIP INST ALLATION. Do not begin milling until the Engineer approves the
pavement repairs, all of the start and stop locations, and the edge line, Subsection 406- 3.01, and the rumble strip test section, Subsection 406- 3.03. Do not construct rumble strips on HMA longitudinal joints or on Portland Cement Concrete. Rumble strip types are "Shoulder" and "Centerline". Each type has its own pattern identified in the Plans. Install the rumble strip types where specified.
406-3.05 CLEAN UP. . Handle, transport, and store, or dispose of material according to the
Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) regulations. Keep the travel lanes free of milling debris . Clean milling debris off the pavement. Do not berm the millings at the shoulder edge. Do not allow an accumulation of millings to impede road drainage or enter any waterways. Remove millings immediately following rumble strip installation. Maintain the removal operation within 50 feet of the milling machine. Dry power brooming and power brooming without direct immediate means of collection/pickup is not permitted. Dispose waste material outside the project limits, unless directed otherwise.
406-4.01 METHOD OF MEASUREMEN T. See Section 109 and as follows:
Lump Sum. A single lump sum price for all rumble strips installed as shown on the plans. Linear Foot. A single lineal measurement for every measured foot of rumble strip installed. Station. A single li neal measurement for every measured station of rumble strip installed. Mile. A single lineal measurement for every measured mile of rumble strip installed. Shoulder rumble strip measurement, when measured by Station or Mile, includes gaps (provided for bicycles or other as shown in the Plans) between groups of rumble strips.

501-1.02 Definitions .
ADMIXTURE. A material other than wat er, aggregate, hydraulic cement, pozzolan, and fiber reinforcement, added to the batch before or during mixing, used as an ingredient of a cementitious mixture to modify its freshly mixed, setting, or hardened properties. Air-Entraining Admixture. An admi xture causing the development of a system of microscopic air bubbles in concrete, mortar, or cementitious material paste during mixing, usually to improve its workability and resistance to damage by freezing and thawing. Set-Accelerating Admixture. An admi xture causing an increase in the rate of hydration of the hydraulic cement and shortens the time of setting, increases the rate of strength development, or both. Set-Retarding Admixture. An admixture causing a decrease in the rate of hydration of the hydra ulic cement and lengthens the time of setting, decreases the rate of strength development, or both. Water -Reducing Admixture. An admixture either increasing slump of freshly mixed mortar or concrete without increasing water content or maintaining slump wit h a reduced amount of water, due to factors other than air entrainment. AGITATION. The process of providing motion in mixed concrete just sufficient to prevent segregation or loss of plasticity. BLEED WATER. The autogenous flow of water emerging from newly placed concrete, and caused by the settlement of the solid materials within the mass. The relative quantity of mix water that will bleed can be estimated by AASHTO T 158. CAMBER. For prestressed concrete members, camber is the net upward deflection of an eccentrically prestressed concrete member due to the combined loads, shrinkage, creep, and eccentricity of the prestress force. For non- prestressed members, camber is a deflection intentionally built into a structural element or form to improve appearance or to nullify the deflection of the element under the effects of loads, shrinkage, and creep. CEMENT. A binding material that sets and hardens by hydration and is capable of doing so underwater, sometimes called hydraulic cements. CEMENTITIOUS MATERIA L. Hydraulic cements and pozzolans with cementing properties. CHAMFER. A beveled edge or corner formed into finished concrete.
