234 ALASKA 2020 SECTION 508 WATERPROOFING MEMBRA NE

508-1.01 DESCRIPTION . Furnish and install waterproofing membrane system on concrete bridge

decks. Remove and dispose of waterproofing membrane systems on exist ing concrete bridge decks.

508-1.02 SUBMITTALS. Submit for approval a copy of the manufacturer’s latest data sheets,

installation procedure, curb and corner details, and manufacturer’s on- site representative’s name and experience. For low voltage electric field vector mapping (EFVM) acceptance methods, submit for approval an acceptance testing plan. Include a list of equipment to be used, a diagram showing installation locations, inspection method, inspector’s name and experience, and a letter from the mem brane manufacturer stating that the system is compatible with EFVM testing. The EFVM inspector must not be employed by the contractor, subcontractor, or installer. Provide one complete submittal not less than 30 days prior to installation of the waterproof ing membrane system.

508-1.03 MANUFACTURE R’S ON -SITE REPRESEN TATIVE. Install waterproofing membrane

system under the on- site supervision of a third- party representative from the manufacturer. The representative must not be employed by the contractor, subc ontractor, or installer. The representative must be on site for the full duration of installation, testing, and during placement of the first lift of pavement overlay material. Do not substitute manufacturer’s representative listed in the submittal without prior written approval from the Engineer.

508-2.01 MATERIALS. Use materials that conform to the following:

Spray -Applied Waterproofing Membrane Subsection 731- 2.01 Sheet Waterproofing Membrane Subsection 731- 2.02 Pavement Overlay Material Division 400 CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

508-3.01 Constructio N.

1.General . Install the waterproofing membrane system in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation procedure. Do not apply membrane until the end of the curing period and until concrete and grout has reached at least 80 percent of the specified 28- day compressive strength (f’c). Apply the membrane system vertically at curb faces up to the pavement thickness shown on the Plans. Use a tack coat recommended for use by the manufacturer. Protect adjacent surfaces not to be covered with the membrane from splatter or coating. Use pavement overlay material within the membrane manufacturer’s temperature limitations. Hold a pre- placement meeting at least 3 days prior to application of the membrane. Include the Engineer, manufacturer’s on- site representative, membrane installation foreman, and paving foreman.
2.Deck Preparation. Remove existing pavement and membrane systems by methods that do not damage the concrete.Prepare the concrete surfaces that are to recei ve the waterproofing membrane system as required by the manufacturer. Provide a letter prior to membrane placement from the manufacturer’s on- site representative stating that the concrete surfaces to receive membrane meet the manufacturer’s requirements and contract requirements prior to placement of the membrane system. 235 ALASKA 2020 508-3.02 QUALITY CON TROL.
1.General . Record material batch numbers, batch manufacture date, processing information, and quantity of each material used. Submit these records to the Engineer within 3 days of completing the membrane installation.
2.Spray -Applied Waterproofing Membrane. Perform tensile adhesion bond testing of the waterproofing membrane system, at locations determined by the Engineer, in accordance with ASTM D4541 at least once e very 2000 square feet of coated area . Perform wet or dry film thickness testing of the base membrane at least once per 100 square feet of coated area. Perform wet film thickness in accordance with ASTM D4414 and perform dry film thickness in accordance wit h either SSPC PA2 or SSPC PA9.
3.Sheet Waterproofing Membrane. Perform visual inspections on all surfaces throughout the installation process and repair any tears, unbonded areas or other defects in the waterproofing membrane system.

508-3.03 ACCEPTANCE TEST ING. Perform acceptance testing by performing a flood test or by

low voltage electric field vector mapping (EFVM).

1.Flood Testing. Perform flood testing of spray -applied waterproofing membrane prior to placement of tack coat or asphalt. Perform flood testi ng of sheet waterproofing membrane after completion of asphalt overlay.
a.Saturate the bridge deck with repeated and continuous passes of a water truck in each lane for a 10 minute period.
b.Continue wetting the deck at successive 15 minute intervals for a 4 hour period by driving at least one pass of the water truck in each traffic lane.
c.Prevent or mitigate erosion of embankments.
d.Any leakage during or after the 4 hour period will require repair according to 508- 3.04.
2.Low Voltage Electric Field Vector Mapping . Perform EFVM acceptance testing in accordance with ASTM D7877. Perform testing prior to application of pavement. Do not apply asphalt until all repairs are made. Test again application of pavement. Provide a letter from the EFVM inspector stating that n o breaches were found or that all breaches were repaired according to

508-3 04.

508-3.04 Membrane Re Pairs.

1.General . Repair breaches in the membrane system in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations. If the total area of repairs exceeds 1 percent of the covered area, remove the membrane system in its entirety and reapply the membrane system. For the purposes of this section the minimum individual repair area will each be counted as one square foot. After all repairs are made and prior to final acceptance retest the membrane system in accordance with 508- 3.03.
2.Spray -Applied Waterproofing Membrane Repairs . Use repair materials that meet the requirements of 731- 2.01.
3.Sheet Waterproofing Membrane. If flood test acceptance testing is used after paving an d breaches in the membrane system are found, remove the pavement and membrane system in its entirety and reapply the membrane system. 236 ALASKA 2020 508-4.01 METHOD OF M EASUREMENT. See Section 109.

508-5.01 BASIS OF PA YMENT. Contract price is for removal and disposal of existing

membrane(s) where present, and installation of new membrane(s). Pavement overlay material will be paid for under the respective bid items for the material used. Removal and reapplication of pavement overlay material due to unacceptable membrane is subsidiary. Payment will be made under: PAY ITEM Item Number Item Description Unit 508.0001.____ Waterproofing Membrane,______ LS 237 ALASKA 2020 SECTION 509 MICROSILICA MODIFIED CONCRETE OVERLAY [ RESERVED ]
