SECTION 721: PAVEMENT MARKING REMOVAL
721.1 Description
This Work consists of providi ng labor and Equipment for removal of linear markings, cross walks, stop bars, legends and symbols as well as removal of curing compound on new concrete Roadway surfaces as specified in the Contract or as di rected by the Project Manager.

721.3 Construction Requirements
Pavement markings shall be removed from the pavement to the max imum extent possible by method of water blasting that does not Materially a lter or damage the surface, to the satisfaction of the Project Manager. Operations that do no t produce the desired result, damage the pavement, or may constitute a hazard to the travelin g public will not be permitted. Materials deposited on the pavement as a result of removal of p avement markings shall be promptly removed so as not to interfere with traffic or Roadway drainage. Pavement markings designated to be removed, shall be removed be fore any change is made in new traffic patterns. Temporary markings conflicting w ith permanent pavement markings shall be removed prior to placement of the permanent p avement markings. All temporary recording shall be removed on sections where these ma rkings conflicts with revised traffic lanes prior to openi ng of new lanes to traffic. New concrete pavement surfaces that have curing compound on the m, and require new pavement markings, shall be cleaned as per pavement markings ma nufactures recommendations for surface preparation. A dustless-abrasive s hot blasting, water blasting, or other approved cleaning method may be used. The removal pro cess shall remove all curing compound and its residue, all loose dust and dirt from t he areas where primer and or new pavement markings are to be installed. The Contractor shall remove temporary pavement stripes and mark ings when the Project Manager determines that they are no longer required for traffic control. The Contractor shall not use non-reflective black removable marking tape or paint to obliterate temporary pavement markings. The Contractor shall provide the necessary personnel and Equipm ent to warn and divert traffic during installation and removal of temporary markings f rom the area where the Work is in progress. The Contractor shall remove and dispose of debris as directed b y the Project Manager.
721.4 Method of Measurement
The Department will measure remova l of pavement markings or rem ove of curing compound by four (4) inch, six (6) inch, eight (8) inch, twelve (12) inch, and twenty-four (24) inch widths per linear foot. Legends, symbols, and specialty m arkings will be paid by each.

721.5.1 Work Included in Payment
The following Work and items will be considered as included in the payment for the main items and will not be measured or paid for separately: 1. Repair of damaged pavement; and 2. Providing the necessary personnel and equipment to warn and divert traffic during installation and removal of temporary markings.
