00228.43 211 Section 00228 - Temporary Pedestrian and Bicyclist Routing
Description
00228.00Scope - In addition to the requirements of Section 00221, this Work consists of furnishing,
installing, operating, maintaining, inspecting, and removing temporary devices for accommodating pedestrians and bicyclists through a W ork Zone.
00228.01General - When Work briefly or intermittently blocks or restricts the use of a pedestrian
route, and a temporary detour route is not practicable due to the short duration of the restriction, place one "Sidewalk Open" (CW11- 3) sign in advance of the restriction and visible from the next closest alternate pedestrian pathway facing both directions of pedestrian traffic. Signs may be mounted between the panels of a Type II barricade or on a single post TSS. Do not place the sign or support such that it narrows the pedestrian pathway to a width of less than 4 feet.
Materials
00228.10Pedestrian Channelizing Devices - Use PCD from the QPL and as shown on the
Standard Drawings or in the TCP.
00228.12Bicycle Channelizing Devices - Use bicycle channelizing devices (BCD) from the QPL or
Conditional Use List.
00228.13Temporary Curb Ramps - Furnish temporary curb ramps from the QPL or the Conditional
Use List; or construct temporary curb r amps on site according to the Standard Drawings. Use ACP, PCC, or other approved M aterials for on- site constructed temporary curb ramps. Furnish truncated dome detectable warning surface for temporary curb ramps from the QPL according to 00759.12.
00228. 14 Temporary Walks - Use temporary walks from the QPL or use ACP, PCC, or other approved Materials for on -site constructed temporary walks.
Construction
00228.40Pedestrian Channelizing Devices - Install PCD as shown in the Plans or in the TCP
Provide a continuous route by interconnecting all adjacent PCD. Provide a clean unobstructed path for pedestrians according to 00220.02 and MUTCD requirements.
00228.42Bicycle Channelizing Devices - Install bicycle channelizing devices as shown. Prov ide a
continuous route by interconnecting all adjacent BCD. Provide a clean unobstructed path according to 00220.02(c).
00228.43Temporary Curb Ramps - Install or construct temporary curb ramps as shown in the
Standard Drawings and in the Plans, and ac cording to the manufacturer's recommendations, if applicable. Temporary curb ramp dimensions and grades shall comply with the Standard Drawings or requirements approved by the Engineer. Repair or reconstruct unacceptable temporary curb ramps before openi ng to pedestrian traffic. For curb ramps that cross, or are placed adjacent to, a gutter line or other drainage Structure, provide an approved means to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom of the ramp or overflowing onto the ramp surface.
Instal l a minimum 2 foot wide truncated dome detectable warning surface on temporary curb ramps at pedestrian street crossings. Omit truncated dome detectable warning surfaces on temporary curb ramps that are not at a pedestrian street crossing.
00228.44 212 00228.44 Temp orary Walks - Construct temporary walks as shown or directed. Repair or reconstruct unacceptable temporary walks before opening to pedestrian traffic.
Maintenance
00228.63Temporary Curb Ramps and Temporary Walks - Inspect and maintain temporary curb
ramps and temporary walks for:
Any damaged curb ramp or walk surfaces. Ramp and walk alignment or connections to existing sidewalks or Roadway surfaces. Compliance with the dimensions and grades in the Standard Drawings or requirements approved by the Engineer. Items identified by the manufacturer’s recommendations. Other ramp or walk quality or performance issues, as directed. Keep ramps and walks unobstructed. Maintain a firm, stable, and slip resistant surface free of debris. After completion of the Work, restore the area on which the temporary curb ramp or temporary walk occupied as directed.
Measurement
00228.80Measurement - The quantities of Work perf ormed under this Section will be measured
according to the following. The quantities for Work Zone Traffic Control Measures will be limited to the following, unless otherwise specified:
The initial installation of quantities necessary to complete the Project based on the Contract Schedule of Items. The initial installation of additional TCD and TCM that the Engineer and Contractor agree are necessary to ensure a safe Work Zone. The replacement of TCD and TCM damaged by Public Traffic and replaced by the C ontractor.
measured on the length basis upon delivery to the Project. The quantities will be limited to those in the approved TCP .
a temporary curb ramp is constructed or placed.
as shown or directed.
00228.91 213 Payment
00228.90Payment - The accepted quantities of Work performed under this Section will be paid for
at the Contract unit price, per unit of measurement, for the following items: Pay Item Unit of Measurement
In item (c), the type of temporary curb ramp will be inserted in the blank.
Item (c) includes furnishing and installing truncated dome detectable w arning surfaces.
Payment for item (c) and (d) will be payment in full for furnishing, installing and maintaining each temporary curb ramp or temporary walks.
Payment will be payment in full for furnishing, installing, moving, operating, maintaining, inspecting, and removing the Materials and TCD, and for furnishing all Equipment, labor, and Incidentals necessary to complete the Work as specified, except as covered in 00221.90(b).
No separate or additional payment will be made for:
Removing temporary cur b ramps and temporary walks Restoring the area on which the temporary curb ramps or temporary walks occupied Materials Surfacing Other temporary curb ramp or temporary walk hardware
TCD items included under this Section damaged by Public Traffic and repla ced by the Contractor will be paid for at the Contract price for the Pay Items listed in the Contract Schedule of Items or in approved Contract Change Orders, unless otherwise specified. Payment for replacing damaged TCD will only be made when:
The Engineer orders it. The replacement devices are used on the Project. The damaged devices are disposed of to the Engineer's satisfaction.
