972.1REQUIREMENTS

These specifications will apply to all high strength bolts, anchor bolts, and anchor rods.

972.2SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

A.General: All bolts, anchor bolts, anchor rods, nuts, and washers will have the manufacturer marking on them. The supplier will provide the symbol and address of each bolt, anchor bolt, anchor rod, nut, and washer manufacturer. The supplier and contractor will maintain the identification and integrity of fasteners supplied under either the “Production Lot” or “Shipping Lot” method. All certificates, test reports, and shipping containers will be identified with the appropriate lot identification number. The Contractor will either pre-assemble bolts, anchor bolts, anchor rods, nuts, and washers according to the certified rotational capacity tests or indicate how he plans to maintain the integrity of the lots through installation. The supplier’s certification will provide a lot number, which will match the shipping package. The certification will provide all test results and will indicate when and where all testing was done, including the rotational capacity tests and the zinc coating thickness. Nuts for mechanically galvanized fasteners will be overtapped to the minimum amount required for fastener assembly. All bolts, nuts, washers, and direct tension indicators will be mechanically galvanized in accordance with ASTM B695 Class 55. When direct tension indicators are used adjacent to weathering steel, the direct tension indicators will be mechanically galvanized in accordance with ASTM B695 Class 55 and epoxy coated in accordance with ASTM F959. Mechanically galvanized nuts will be lubricated with a lubricant containing a visible dye. The Contractor will provide all mechanical and chemical test data as specified in ASTM A563 and ASTM A194. B.High Strength Bolts: Bolts will conform to ASTM F3125 Grade A325. The high-strength bolts will be Type 1 for painted steel structures and Type 3 for weathering steel bridges. Nuts will conform to ASTM A563 DH or ASTM A194 2H. Washers will conform to ASTM F436. Direct tension indicators will conform to ASTM F959 for the grade of the bolt specified. 972 Page 548High-strength bolts for structural steel joints will conform to ASTM F3125 Grade A325. When Grade A325 Type 3 bolts are specified, the bolts along with nuts and washers will have an atmospheric corrosion resistance approximately two times that of carbon steel with copper. Bolt and nut dimensions will conform to the dimensions shown in Table 1 and to the requirements for Heavy Hexagon Structural Bolts or Heavy Semi-Finished Hexagon Nuts given in ANSI Standard B18.2.1 and B18.2.2 respectively. C.Anchor Bolts and Anchor Rods: Bolts or rods conforming to ASTM A449 and F1554 are allowed to be used for anchor bolts and anchor rods. Other materials may be submitted for review providing the following information is submitted: 1.The allowable stresses that are to be used for design based on the proposed material. 2.Minimum average Charpy V-Notch impact values for 15 ft-lb at -20°F in accordance with ASTM A370. 3.Ultimate wedge tensile strength in accordance with ASTM A370. 4.Yield strength reports in accordance with ASTM A370. Anchor bolts and anchor rods will be either threaded full length or equipped with a satisfactory mechanical end anchorage. Details for any mechanical end anchorage will be included in the shop plans submittal. Swaged anchor bolts and anchor rods are not allowed. Anchor bolts and anchor rods with hooked end anchorage are only allowed for use in anchoring pedestrian push button poles, traffic signal cabinets, and battery backup cabinets. 972 Page 550The anchor bolt and anchor rod threads will be three inches plus the projection. At least three 3 inches of threads will be below the top of the concrete. Rolled UNC threads are required for all anchor bolts and anchor rods. Nuts will conform to ASTM A194, 2H or ASTM A563, DH. All nuts are to be heavy hex. Jam nuts will conform to ASTM A563 Grade A. Washers will conform to ASTM F436. Direct tension indicators will conform to ASTM F2437 for the grade of the bolt specified. Direct tension indicators will be mechanically galvanized in accordance with ASTM B695, Class 55. Anchor bolts, anchor rods, nuts, and washers will be hot dipped galvanized in accordance with ASTM F2329 or mechanically galvanized in accordance with ASTM B695 Class 55. D.Bolt, Anchor Bolt, and Anchor Rod Testing: Bolt, anchor bolt, and anchor rod testing will conform to the following: When bolts, anchor bolts, or anchor rods conforming to ASTM F3125, A449, A307, or F1554 are designated for use in the plans or shop plans, a Certified Mill Test Report for each type designated will be submitted for approval to the Certification Engineer a minimum of 14 days prior to incorporating these bolts into the work. Certified Mill Test Reports for nut, washers, direct tension indicators, and other required hardware will be included. For ASTM A307 and A449 bolts, the Wedge Test Method is required only for square and hexagon head bolts. The Wedge Test Method is not required for ASTM F1554 bolts. Proof load tests on bolts, nuts, anchor bolts, and anchor rods in accordance with ASTM F606 Method 1 are required. Wedge testing of full size bolts and anchor rods is required in accordance with ASTM F3125. Galvanized bolts and anchor bolts will be wedge tested after galvanizing. Proof load tests for the nuts will be performed after galvanizing, overtapping, and lubricating. 980 Page 551980 PAINT

980.1TRAFFIC PAINT

The finished paint will be smooth and homogeneous, free of coarse particles, skins, or any other foreign materials detrimental to the use or appearance of the paint. High build waterborne paint will meet the requirements of Section 980.1 B. The manufacturer will submit a “Certificate of Compliance” for each batch of paint produced for use under this specification. The certification will contain the manufacturer’s code number and batch number along with the test results of each batch for weight per gallon, viscosity, drying time, percent pigment, percent vehicle, and fineness of grind. A.Waterborne Paint : The paint will use 100% acrylic polymer such as Dow FASTRACKTM 3427, Arkema DT 250, or an approved equal. 1.Quantitative Requirements: The finished paint will meet the following quantitative requirements: WHITE YELLOW Lead , parts per million 100 100 ASTM D3335 or X-ray fluorescence Pigment , percent by weight 60.0 - 62.5 56.1 - 58.6 Tested in accordance with ASTM D3723 Titanium Dioxide , pounds/gallon, min 1.00 0.20 ASTM D 476 Type II Rutile 92% min. When tested in accordance with ASTM D562, the consistency of the paint will be within the stated specification when determined a minimum of 48 hours after packaging the material. Weight per Gallon , pounds, min Tested in accordance with ASTM D1475. In addition to compliance with the minimum, the weight per gallon will not vary more than ± 0.3 pounds/gallon between batches.
