Part 1 — General

1.1 Section Includes

1.5 Submittals

A.Temporary retaining wall working drawings for review 1. Include at least the following:
a.Type, location, size and other pertinent information about the temporary retaining wall for each location
b.Plans, profiles, cross sections, and details (including grading and tie- ins, if applicable ) for each retaining wall
c.Measures to be taken to prevent impacts on or interference with adjacent foundations, structures, utilities, and properties from temporary retaining walls ; including but not limited to impacts or interference from structural elements, settlements, and vibrations 1) Provide upper threshold values for settlement for each protected element .
d.Specific details that reflect construction staging requirements of the bridge or other work item in the vicinity of the temporary retaining wall
e.Surface and subsurface drainage details including dewatering requirements, if applicable
f.Geotechnical design parameters necessary for the design of the wall
g.Drivability analyses of piles or sheet piles, if used
h.Subgrade preparation and stabilization measures , if required
i.Details and measures for incorporating temporary retaining walls (in whole or in part) into the backfill of permanent retaining walls or into permanent slopes, if applicable 1) Include a drawing showing the limits of the temporary wall which will be incorporated along with its placement relative to the permanent wall or slope to be constructed. a) Provide the permanent wall structure number for reference if applicable 2) Identify submittal requirements for Quality Control items that need to be submitted during temporary wall construction as appropriate for the permanent wall or slope. Including: a) Material Sampling and Testing Requirements b) Certificates of compliance for incorporated materials with test results as applicable c) Signed Mill Test Reports d) Product data sheets e) Grout mix designs f) Field test results g) Construction documentation and observation reports
2.Include supporting calculations sufficient to demonstrate that the retaining wall is designed according to the required criteria.
3.Provide the seal of a Professional Engineer (PE) or Professional Structural Engineer (SE) licensed in the State of Utah on the drawings and calculations .
B.Submit as -built drawings for temporary walls to be incorporated into the backfill of permanent walls or permanent slopes for information before constructing the permanent wall or slope.
1.Include sufficient survey to locate the temporary wall

Part 2 — Products

2.1 Temporary Retaining Wall

A.Use t he following retaining wall types as temporary retaining walls :
1.Mechanical ly Stabilized Earth (MSE) with geosynthetic or metallic soil reinforcing
2.Sheet pile, with or without tieback s
3.Soldier pile and lagging, with or without tieback s
4.Soil nail
5.Cast-in-place concrete
6.Rock/soil anchor

2.2 Materials

A.Concrete
1.Class AA(AE).

B.Reinforcing Steel and Welded Wire
1.Refer to Section 03211.
C.Structural Steel
1.Refer to Section 05120.
D.Geotextiles
1.Refer to Section 02075.

2.3 Design Criteria and Requirements

A.Design temporary retaining wall s according to the UDOT GMOI and the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Construction Specifications .
B.Design temporary retaining walls to support at least the following loads:
1.Earth pressure (including the effects of pore- water pressure)
2.Live load surcharge
3.Construction live loads
4.Embankment surcharge fills
C.Design temporary retaining wall s that will remain in place and become incorporated into permanent retaining walls or slopes (in whole or in part) to meet the requirements for the permanent and temporary conditions, such as materials, compaction, density, settlement, stability, and design life.
D.Consider vibration and settlement requirements when determining temporary retaining wall design criteria.
E.Determine the drivability of proposed piles and sheet piles.

Part 3 — Execution

3.1 General

A.Construct temporary retaining wall s according to the authorized temporary retaining wall working drawings.
B.Maintain stability of temporary slopes .
C.Provide adequate drainage measures for the protection of the temporary works.

3.2 Installation

A.Excavate for temporary retaining wall s according to Section 02317.
B.Construct retaining wall s on solid foundations that are safe from undermining, protected from softening, and capable of supporting the intended imposed loads.
C.Meet materials sampling and testing requirements shown in the authoriz ed Working Drawings.

3.3 Removal

A.Remove temporary retaining walls that are not part of the permanent work at least 2 ft below the finished grade.
B.Remove temporary grading and tie- ins.
