Water Service Sizing — Pressure Limits, Pipe Size & PRVs

Water supply sizing is a trade between two failures: pipe too small and the shower drops when someone flushes; pressure too high and you quietly destroy valves, supply hoses, and the water heater.

Worth knowing

  • A PRV is a maintenance item, not a permanent fix — they drift and fail, usually toward higher pressure. A $10 gauge on a hose bibb is worth checking once a year.
  • Pressure at the street is not pressure at the shower. Elevation costs about 0.43 psi per foot of rise, and every fitting, meter, softener, and filter takes more.
  • Water service size and meter size are separate decisions, and the meter is frequently the real bottleneck in an older house running a 5/8 in. meter.
  • Well systems are sized around the pressure tank cut-in and cut-out settings rather than street pressure, but the fixture flow requirements are identical.
  • Jurisdictions that adopt water-conservation amendments may cap fixture flow rates below the IRC values, which changes the sizing assumptions.
