Re-roof permit checklist — Los Angeles County, California

Assembled from Los Angeles County’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Los Angeles County requires a permit for a re-roof.

When a permit is not required

Reroofing is not on the County's Title 26 Section 106.3 list of work exempt from permits, so a roof covering replacement is permit work in unincorporated Los Angeles County. The exempt-work handout covers accessory structures, fences, low decks, small pools, awnings and cosmetic finishes, and does not carve out any percentage of roof area the way some neighboring counties do. Fire Hazard Severity Zone and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone properties face additional Class A roof assembly and ember-resistant detailing requirements that are enforced through this permit.
