General building work permit checklist — Fort Collins, Colorado

Assembled from Fort Collins’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Fort Collins requires a permit for general building work.

When a permit is not required

A project that is exempt from a permit must still follow City codes, laws and ordinances. Exempt residential work includes interior finish work such as painting, wallpapering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets and countertops; sidewalks and driveways; prefabricated pools less than 24 inches deep; storm windows, storm doors and rain gutters; window awnings projecting 54 inches or less that need no extra supports; play structures of 120 square feet or less within published size and height limits; water tanks on grade up to 5,000 gallons with a height-to-width ratio of 2:1 or less; nonstructural siding replacement that is not part of a fire-rated assembly and follows state asbestos and lead-paint rules (newly installed vinyl or polypropylene plastic siding requires a permit); shade-cloth or single-layer poly-roofed agricultural structures without service systems or public entry; and minor plumbing, mechanical, fuel-gas and electrical repairs. Historic review is required for window awning, storm protection and siding work when the building is 50 years or older.
