Deck permit checklist — Hartford, Connecticut

Assembled from Hartford’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Hartford requires a permit for a deck.

When a permit is not required

The City of Hartford's "A Property Owner's Guide to the Permitting Process" does not list decks among the work exempt from permits. The 2022 Connecticut State Building Code, at Section R105.2, exempts a deck at a one- or two-family dwelling when it covers 200 square feet or less, stands 30 inches or less over grade at every point, stays clear of the dwelling, needs no guards, and is not the landing for the required exit door.

Listed because the city publishes a separate rule for each type — not because this project necessarily triggers one. Whether it does depends on your scope of work.
