General building work permit checklist — Atlanta, Georgia

Assembled from Atlanta’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Atlanta requires a permit for general building work.

When a permit is not required

No permit or permit fee is required for repair work to a single-family, duplex, multi-family, or non-residential structure with a total valuation of less than $10,000, provided the work is otherwise lawful. Additional exemptions apply to existing one-family, two-family, and duplex structures and their accessory structures without regard to cost, including interior and exterior painting, repair or replacement of gutters, siding, interior doors, floor and wall coverings, kitchen cabinets, and bath cabinets or countertops that do not involve relocating outlets, appliances, or plumbing fixtures, replacement of up to three sheets of drywall, and non-structural porch or deck repairs. For property in a landmark or historic district governed by Chapter 20 of the zoning ordinance, the scope exemptions do not apply to work affecting the exterior of the structure or site, and the valuation threshold drops to $2,500.
