Do you need a permit?
Shreveport requires a permit for general building work.
The City's Guide to Building Permits & Inspections lists work exempt from a permit under Section R105.2 of the 2021 International Residential Code. Exempt items include cosmetic finish work such as painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, and countertops; small detached decks (200 square feet or less, no higher than 30 inches above grade, not attached to the dwelling, and not serving the required exit door); fences up to 7 feet high; retaining walls up to 4 feet, measured from footing base to wall top, that do not support a surcharge; one-story detached accessory structures of 200 square feet or less, excluding storm shelters; prefabricated swimming pools under 24 inches deep; and playground equipment. The guide directs owners to check with Zoning for accessory structures under 200 square feet and for fences under 6 feet.
