The City's Guide to Building Permits & Inspections, following Section R105.2 of the 2021 International Residential Code, lists as exempt from a building permit small detached decks that are 200 square feet or less, no higher than 30 inches above grade, not attached to the dwelling, and not serving the required exit door.
