Re-roof permit checklist — Durham, North Carolina
Assembled from Durham’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.
Do you need a permit?
Durham does not require a permit for a re-roof.
North Carolina General Statute 160D-1110(c) provides that no permit issued under Article 9 of Chapter 143 of the General Statutes is required for construction, installation, repair, replacement or alteration costing forty thousand dollars ($40,000) or less and performed in accordance with the current edition of the North Carolina State Building Code in a single-family residence, farm building or commercial building, unless the work falls into one of the categories listed in that subsection. Subdivision (c)(5) of that section lists the addition of roofing, excluding replacement, so roofing replacement meeting the requirements of that subsection is not among the categories that fall outside the exemption.
