Do you need a permit?
Greensboro requires a permit for general building work.
Construction costing $40,000 or less does not require a building permit unless it is structural in nature or involves one of the categories listed for that cost level: the addition, repair, or replacement of load-bearing structures; the addition or change in the design of plumbing; the addition, replacement, or change in the design of heating, air-conditioning, or electrical wiring, devices, appliances, or equipment; the use of materials not permitted by the North Carolina State Building Code; the addition of roofing, excluding replacement; and any changes to which the North Carolina Fire Code applies. Within those categories, no permit is required for replacement of windows, doors, exterior siding, or the pickets, railings, stair treads, and decking of porches and exterior decks; for plumbing replacements that do not change size or capacity; or for like-kind replacement of electrical devices and lighting fixtures. North Carolina General Statute 160D-1110 limits this exemption to work performed in accordance with the current edition of the North Carolina State Building Code in a single-family residence, farm building, or commercial building.
