Deck permit checklist — Greensboro, North Carolina

Assembled from Greensboro’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Greensboro requires a permit for a deck.

When a permit is not required

Within the load-bearing structure work listed for construction costing $40,000 or less, no permit is required for replacement of the pickets, railings, stair treads, and decking of porches and exterior decks. North Carolina General Statute 160D-1110 limits this exemption to work performed in accordance with the current edition of the North Carolina State Building Code in a single-family residence, farm building, or commercial building.

Listed because the city publishes a separate rule for each type — not because this project necessarily triggers one. Whether it does depends on your scope of work.
