Do you need a permit?
Rochester requires a permit for general building work.
Section 39-207B of the City's Building Code exempts listed categories of work from the building permit requirement; exempt items include one-story detached tool and storage sheds, playhouses and similar structures of 144 square feet or less serving one- or two-family dwellings or townhouses, playground equipment serving one- or two-family dwellings or townhouses, above-ground swimming pools serving one- or two-family dwellings or townhouses and designed for a water depth of less than 24 inches, window awnings on one- or two-family dwellings or townhouses, partitions or movable cases less than five feet nine inches in height, painting and similar finish work, listed portable appliances, equipment replacement that does not alter the equipment's listing or original specifications, and repairs that do not remove load-bearing elements, affect egress, alter a building system, or take a fire protection system out of service. Repair to existing structures does not require a building permit under section 39-202, and repair does not include work resulting from fire or natural disaster. An exemption is not an authorization to perform work in violation of the Building Code or Energy Code.
