Do you need a permit?
Richmond requires a permit for electrical work.
Installation of wiring and equipment that operates at less than 50 volts, serves broadband communications systems, or serves monitoring or automation systems in dwelling units does not require a permit, unless the installation is located in a plenum, penetrates fire-rated or smoke-protected construction, or is part of a fire alarm, fire detection, fire suppression, smoke control, fire protection supervisory, elevator fire safety control, access or egress control, delayed egress locking, fire damper or door control system. Ordinary repairs that do not require a permit in one- and two-family dwellings include replacement of general use snap switches, dimmer and control switches, 125-volt 15- or 20-ampere receptacles, lighting fixtures and ceiling fans.
