Shed permit checklist — Richmond, Virginia

Assembled from Richmond’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Richmond does not require a permit for a shed.

When a permit is not required

A detached single-story accessory building of 256 square feet or less, such as a garden shed or playhouse, needs no building permit. Accessory buildings that are exempt from a building permit must still meet the required yards and setbacks for the zoning district. This type of project requires a zoning permit application.
