Do you need a permit?
King County requires a permit for electrical work.
This is a structural difference from the Arizona, Nevada and California counties: King County does not issue electrical permits at all. The 2026 Single Family Residential Construction fee guide states that 'Electrical permits are issued by the WA State Department of Labor & Industries.' In Washington, L&I administers electrical permitting and inspection statewide except in the cities and counties that have taken over the program, and unincorporated King County has not. So an electrical permit for a home in unincorporated King County comes from L&I under WAC 296-46B, with L&I's own fee schedule, and the county's building permit does not include electrical. The exemption question is therefore governed by state rule, not county rule. The one county-side note is that roof-mounted residential solar PV under 4 pounds per square foot is exempt from a county building permit, though the electrical side still goes to L&I.
