Do you need a permit?
King County does not require a permit for a fence.
King County's exempt-work list states that fences 6 feet high or less do not require a building permit — the Washington State Building Code baseline. Fences over 6 feet need a permit, and pool barrier fencing is separately regulated. The exemption does not apply on parcels with critical areas: if the parcel contains wetlands, shorelines, flood zones, steep slopes, established clearing limits, setback areas or historically sensitive areas, a permit (and possibly critical-area review) is required even for a low fence. Zoning height and sight-distance rules under Title 21A also apply to exempt fences.
