Do you need a permit?
King County does not require a permit for a re-roof.
King County's exempt-work list expressly includes 'replacement of roofing or siding for detached one and two-family houses,' so an ordinary residential re-roof in unincorporated King County needs no building permit. The exemption is limited to detached one- and two-family houses: multifamily, commercial and accessory-to-commercial roofs are not covered. Structural work — replacing rafters, trusses or significant sheathing, or altering the roof shape — falls outside the exemption. As with all King County exemptions, the presence of critical areas (shoreline, flood zone, steep slope, historically sensitive area) can pull even a re-roof back into permitting.
