SECTION 529: PIER AND ABUTMENT BEARING MODIFICATION
529.1 Description
This Work shall consist of raisi ng Superstructure members and m odifying bearing units in substantial compliance with the pertinent portions of the Stand ard Specifications and the details shown on the Plans or as directed by the Project Manage r.
529.2 Materials
All Materials incorporated permanently into the Work shall meet the requirements as shown on the Plans.
529.3 Construction Requirements
Load-carrying Superstructure mem bers shall be slightly raised and temporarily supported by methods approved by the Proj ect Manager to permit modificati ons to be made to the designated bearing units. Unless the existing concrete deck ha s been removed, all beams or girders in a span shall be simu ltaneously raised an equal verti cal distance and supported. Bearing modifications shall be performed in a manner that will not damage any members being retained in the structure. The Project Manager shall app rove proposed steel cutting and weld removal methods. When shown on the Plans, traffic will be permitted to operate on the Bridge or Bridges during these operations. Unless otherwise provided, painted area damaged by the Work sh all be cleaned and repainted as provided in Section 546, “Recoating Structures” an d Section 547, “Safety and Environmental Requirements for Paint Operations.” No payment w ill be made for recoating damaged areas. The Contractor shall submit Working Drawings, design calculati ons, and jacking procedures to the Project Manager for Acceptance. Design of ja cking and shoring shall be in accordance with the AASHTO Guide Design Specifications for Brid ge Temporary Works. In the event of a conflict between the referenced Guide and this s pecification, this specification will take precedence. The Contra ctor shall submit at least 30 Days before Work is planned to begin. Any resubmittal will require an additional 14 Days for review. The submittal package shall be stamped by a NM Licensed Professional Engineer with a minimum of five (5) years of structural design and Cons truction experience. Construction of the lateral bracing system shall be in accorda nce with the AASHTO Construction Handbook for Bridge Temporary Works. In the event of a conflict between the referenced Handbook and this spec ification, this specification will take precedence.
529.4 Method of Measurement
Pier and abutment bearing modifi cations shall be measured as a completed unit, including Incidental Work, any temporary support required, subm ittal, and any Materials incorporated into the Work, unless noted otherwise on the Plans .

529.5.1 Work Included In Payment
The Department will consider as included in the payment for th e pay item(s) listed in this section and will not measure or pay separately for the followin g Work: 1. Repair of concrete or Bridge elements damaged by the Contrac tor’s operation. 2. Cleaning and repainting areas damaged by the Contractor’s op eration.
